The Authentic Man in a Relationship

Welcome to the April  2014 Newsletter

Q: How does a man behave more authentically in his relationship ?

One of the biggest changes a man who is endeavoring to be self aware will make in his relationship is he will practice being  mindful of listening to his partner, instead of attempting to fix a problem she has.

You know the scenario...she sits down at the end of her day and shares about a challenge she is having; either at work, or with a friend, or perhaps with a family member, and he, ..being more culturally conditioned to problem solve and be solution orientated, automatically wants to fix her problem.

A conscious man will be aware that he really just needs to listen. And there are some very simple ways that both men and women,  can change the way they communicate that will create a space for listening.

  • Accept your partner as they are. Accept that generally, men tend to communicate with a purpose, they want to solve a problem.  Women are more inclined to spend a lot of time communicating so that they can create connection and build relationships.  Neither way is wrong. You can be more available to listening to your partner by releasing your need to change your partner.
  • Ladies, before you get into a conversation with your partner, let your man know what you want.  Do you want him to just listen, or do you want him to support you to solve the problem?
  • For men, in general men tend to think things through before they talk.  So for men, instead of saying nothing is wrong because you are not’t ready to talk about it, tell her you are not’t ready to talk yet and give her a time when you can sit down and share your point of view with her.... Ladies, this is your cue to give him this time to be "in his cave".
  • Ladies, if you want to keep your partners attention, cut to the chase and be direct
  • BOTH men and women need to learn to listen.  Listening does not come naturally.  It takes effort to focus on what someone is saying. The bonus skill is, that you nurture your ability to have empathy.
  • Accept that neither of you is a mind reader.  Assuming you know what someone else is thinking can create a lot of unnecessary drama.. When we break the word assume down we have (ass -of-u-and me), perception gets in the way of truth

By practicing these simple communication skills, men can begin to show up more authentically in their relationships. They can learn to be present, be emotionally available and create safety for both partners to share what what they are feeling, and thinking.
